Eversholt Rail Group has begun looking at a traction system upgrade for its fleet of Class 321 and 322 electrical multiple units and has awarded the contract for a feasibility study to Birmingham-based Vossloh Kiepe UK.

The company, which was acquired by Vossloh Kiepe GmbH in June, will begin trading under the new name on 1 October 2012. Rolling stock owner Porterbrook has commissioned Vossloh Kiepe UK, formerly Transys Projects to test the feasibility of retrofitting fuel-saving gearbox technology on to South West Trains’ Class 158 units.
This collaboration will see Vossloh Kiepe UK undertake the integration design and installation of ZF Ecomat hydromechanical gearboxes on to the Class 158 unit, overcoming the technical challenges of installing the equipment.
“As energy saving and fuel costs remain a major concern for the rail industry, there is a pressing need for engineers to develop new and novel ways to save fuel,” commented Vossloh Kiepe UK’s engineering director Hugh Parker. “This trial is incredibly important to the industry as we have a legacy of regional diesel trains which will stay in service for some time to come.” Continue reading →
