DMU fuel saving initiative

Rolling stock owner Porterbrook has commissioned Vossloh Kiepe UK, formerly Transys Projects to test the feasibility of retrofitting fuel-saving gearbox technology on to South West Trains’ Class 158 units.

This collaboration will see Vossloh Kiepe UK undertake the integration design and installation of ZF Ecomat hydromechanical gearboxes on to the Class 158 unit, overcoming the technical challenges of installing the equipment.

“As energy saving and fuel costs remain a major concern for the rail industry, there is a pressing need for engineers to develop new and novel ways to save fuel,” commented Vossloh Kiepe UK’s engineering director Hugh Parker. “This trial is incredibly important to the industry as we have a legacy of regional diesel trains which will stay in service for some time to come.” Continue reading

Refresh and installation of CCTV on 148 trains for Southeastern

With over 2000 train services and 570,000 passenger movements on any given day, a programme to update a fleet of Southeastern trains with minimal disruption is no mean feat.

Vossloh Kiepe UK, formerly Transys Projects, was commissioned to take on the monumental task, which took 18 months to complete. The project involved the refresh and installation of new and improved CCTV systems on 148 Electrostar mainline and metro trains. Continue reading
